Breed Overview

The Rat Terrier is a small breed of dog originally bred for hunting rats. They were popularized as all-around farm dogs, and later, as adorable house pets. The breed has a muscular physique and short stature, with a long, broad head and large, erect ears. They come in many different colors and sizes ranging from Toy to Standard, and the average life expectancy is between 13 and 16 years.

Care and Grooming

Rat Terriers require minimal grooming, and only need occasional baths. They have short, thick coats and sheds minimal amounts of fur, making them great low maintenance pets. It is important to regularly brush and comb the coat of a Rat Terrier to prevent matting. Although clipping is unnecessary, trimming the fur around the feet and under the ears is generally recommended. Nail trims and ear checks should also be done regularly.

Training and Socialization

Rat Terriers are highly intelligent and can generally be trained to obey commands easily. They are very loyal and loving dogs, but can become territorial and aggressive if not properly socialized. Early puppy socialization classes and regular positive reinforcement is highly recommended. They have a tendency to develop small dog syndrome if not trained properly, so consistent and gentle discipline can be very effective in preventing such behaviors.

Health and Wellness

Rat Terriers are generally healthy, but do have tendencies to develop some minor health conditions commonly seen in small breeds. These may include luxating patella, skin allergies, gum disease, and obesity. It is important to provide proper nutrition, regular veterinary check-ups, and monthly heartworm prevention for your Rat Terrier.

Living Environment

Rat Terriers are active dogs that are happiest when given the chance to exercise for at least one hour each day. Access to a secure outdoor area for play and exploration is beneficial, but they can do well in a variety of living environments, as long as they are given the proper amount of activity and exercise.

Temperament and Personality

Rat Terriers are energetic, inquisitive, and devoted dogs. They possess a bold and independent personality, while still being very loyal and affectionate with their owners. They can be protective of their family and make great watchdogs, but their affectionate nature can be redirected in a more positive way through proper training and socialization.

Common Challenges

The Rat Terrier can be challenging if they are not given the proper amount of exercise. Without regular activity, they can become bored quickly and display destructive behaviors. They can also be difficult to housebreak, so owners must be patient and use consistent methods of training. Some Rat Terriers may be hesitant and fearful around other animals, so slow and steady socialization is recommended.
