The Portuguese Water Dog is a medium-sized, athletic breed that originated in Portugal. This versatile breed excels in activities such as agility training, water sports, and search and rescue efforts. Their thick coat tolerates a wide range of climates and comes in various shades. They LOVE people and seek companionship and will often become very attached to their owners.

Care and Grooming

The Portuguese Water Dog requires regular brushing in order to prevent matting. Professional grooming is recommended every six to eight weeks to keep their coat in top condition. Their nails should also be trimmed regularly to maintain healthy feet. Additionally, these pups should also receive monthly baths, as well as ear-care and dental-care.

Training and Socialization

Training is an important part of helping ensure your Portuguese Water Dog integrates into the family in a positive way. It should begin as soon as possible to capitalize on their natural intelligence and willingness to learn. Socialization should also begin young in order to curb any kind of aggression or unnecessary barking.

Health and Wellness

Portuguese Water Dogs require regular check-ups with a veterinarian. They're genetically predisposed to a number of conditions, including hip dysplasia, PRA and Addison's Disease. The most commonly seen health issue is skin allergies.

Living Environment

Portuguese Water Dogs don't require a particularly large living space, as long as they have access to a yard to run and expel energy. These dogs are better off in a home that is not too confining or noisy so they can relax and enjoy a peaceful atmosphere.
