Breed Overview:

The Alaskan Klee Kai, also known as the AKK, is a small breed of dog that was created in Alaska in the late 1970s to resemble a miniature version of the larger Alaskan Husky. Alaskan Klee Kai are very rare, and come in three size varieties: toy, miniature, and standard. When full grown, these dogs usually weigh between 5 and 22 pounds. AKK have sharp, alert, and at times independent personalities, and usually have a plumed tail and upright ears; making them strikingly beautiful with their fox-like looks. Due to their diminutive size, these dogs are perfect for apartment living.

Care and Grooming:

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a low maintenance dog that requires minimal grooming. A weekly brushing and occasional baths should be enough to keep their coat looking and feeling its best. AKK have a double-layered, medium-length coat that requires regular brushing in order to prevent matting and to help remove excess dirt and debris. The breed also sheds seasonally and requires additional brushing at that time.

Training and Socialization:

The Alaskan Klee Kai is an intelligent breed and is generally easy to train. Positive reinforcement and lots of praise are the key to success with these dogs. They learn instinctively and also respond well to structure and routine. Like all breeds, AKK require socialization to ensure they become well-rounded and friendly. Exposure to new people, sounds, smells, and environments are all important components of a puppy socialization program.

Health and Wellness:

The Alaskan Klee Kai is a generally healthy breed. It is important to work with a veterinarian to ensure that the dog is getting all of the necessary vaccinations against common canine diseases. AKK are also prone to certain conditions, such as luxating patella, which is an uncommon genetic disorder that affects the kneecap and can lead to lameness. Additionally, being small dogs that often live in an apartment environment, they are also at risk of obesity, so it is important to monitor their weight closely.

Living Environment:

The Alaskan Klee Kai is an ideal companion for apartment-living, as they are small and therefore require little space. They do best in moderate climates and should not be left outdoors for extended periods of time, as they cannot tolerate extreme heat or cold. Due to their love of people, these dogs would prefer to stay indoors with their family.

Temperament and Personality:

Alaskan Klee Kai are intelligent, affectionate, and alert. They can be independent minded and stubborn at times, so firm, consistent leadership is important. AKK thrive on human companionship and are loyal to their owners; however, they can be wary of strangers or other animals. For this reason, proper socialization is key - especially at a young age

Common Challenges:

Alaskan Klee Kai require firm leadership, routine, and structure, especially when they are puppies, or they can become willful, headstrong, and potentially destructive if boredom sets in. They also tend to be vocal, so training them to bark only when necessary is important. Lastly, they may get overly excited at times, so ensure that visitors to the home are properly introduced and give the dog time to settle down to prevent any excess jumping.
