Breed Overview

The Icelandic Sheepdog is a medium-sized, spitz-type breed of dog that originated in Iceland and is the only native dog in the country. It is characterized by a long, furry double coat, large, upright ears, and a distinctive 'prancing' trot. In Iceland, they are highly valued as working dogs and are used to herd sheep and other livestock, as well as to hunt small game. Care and Grooming

Due to its thick double-coat, the Icelandic Sheepdog needs weekly brushing to prevent matting and maintain its luxurious fur. Occasional bathing is needed to keep the coat looking its best. Additionally, trimming the fur between its toes and around the ears should be done every two to three months to help keep its fur clean and healthy. Nail trimming and dental care should also be part of its regular grooming routine.

Training and Socialization

The Icelandic Sheepdog is a high energy, active breed that requires regular exercise and mental stimulation in order to stay happy and healthy. Obedience and agility classes are a great way to provide both and give the breed an outlet to express its intelligence and enthusiasm. Socialization is especially important during puppyhood, as it helps the breed develop good manners and proper behavior around people and other animals.

Health and Wellness

The Icelandic Sheepdog is generally a healthy breed, however there are a few health concerns associated with it. These include hip dysplasia, eye problems, and some genetic and coat conditions. Living Environment

The Icelandic Sheepdog can adapt to almost any living situation as long as it has access to plenty of exercise and activities. Due to their dense coats, they do best in temperate climates. They may also do well in homes with large, well-fenced yards, although they should always be walked on a leash when going on walks as they may pick up chasing small game if given the opportunity.

Common Challenges
