The Hovawart is a medium-large handsome and friendly dog with origins dating back to the Middle Ages in Germany. It is an intelligent working breed with strong protective instincts, loyal to its family and known to be good-natured with strangers. Its coat is thick, double layered, and can be black, blonde, or of a combo of both shades.

The Hovawart is an easy to groom breed, requiring regular brushing of its thick coat each week. They are also an average shedder, and may require occasional trimming or clipping to keep their hair looking neat and healthy. They should also be bathed when necessary, but too often may strip away natural oils that help keep the coat healthy.

Hovawarts benefit from early socialization to help ensure they are comfortable with new people and situations.
