Breed Overview

The Chinese Crested is an alert and active toy breed. It is light in frame, with graceful, elegant lines. The breed has two variations, the Hairless variety and the Powderpuff. Both variations have pointed, bat-like ears, deep, large, and almond-shaped eyes, and a pronounced muzzle. They stand between 11-13 inches at the shoulder and weigh between 8-12 lbs. Chinese Cresteds come in a variety of colors that include white, black, chocolate, blue, fawn, red, and chestnut.

Care and Grooming

Chinese Cresteds have low to moderate grooming needs. The Hairless variety requires more attention to their skin, which can be prone to dryness. The Powderpuff has a full double coat that must be brushed regularly and trimmed once a month. Both varieties should have their eyes, nails, and teeth inspected and cleaned regularly.

Training and Socialization

Chinese Cresteds are highly intelligent, quick learners. They can sometimes be stubborn, so training should be done with patience and consistency. Early socialization is important to help the Chinese Crested become well-adjusted and confident.

Health and Wellness

Chinese Cresteds are generally healthy, but may be prone to patellar luxation, skin allergies, and heart issues. They require regular vet check-ups as well as vaccinations and heartworm prevention.

Living Environment

The Chinese Crested is an energetic breed that loves attention and companionship. They prefer to live indoors and can do well in apartments as long as they are taken on regular walks and playtimes. Chinese Cresteds love to be around people and become sad if left alone for long periods of time.

Temperament and Personality

Chinese Cresteds are playful, affectionate and loyal. They can be wary of strangers and need early socialization to be comfortable around new people. Chinese Cresteds are very sensitive and need gentle, consistent training and leadership.

Common Challenges

The Chinese Crested is not a good breed for first-time or inexperienced owners. They can be stubborn and can quickly become unruly if not given proper training and guidance. Chinese Cresteds are sensitive and do not respond to harsh training methods, so patience and consistency are important.
