Working Kelpie

Breed Overview

The Working Kelpie is an incredibly intelligent and active herding dog. They are tireless and obedient and an excellent choice for agility and obedience competitions. They also make great family pets due to their loyal and loving behavior. The Working Kelpie is a medium sized dog and traditionally is black and tan or black and white. They have well-developed muscles, a double coat, compact body, short haired head and ears, and a long tail.

Care and Grooming

Working Kelpies have a thick, straight coat that will need to be groomed regularly. The double coat will need frequent brushing with a slicker brush and occasional bathing. They also need regular nail trimming and their teeth brushing.

Training and Socialization

Working Kelpies require positive reinforcement training methods and are very intelligent and eager to please. They make excellent agility competitors and obedience dogs as they are obedient and loyal. Socialization is also an important part of any Working Kelpie’s upbringing or they may become too cautious and fearful.

Health and Wellness

Working Kelpies are generally healthy with an average lifespan of 12-14 years. They are prone to hip dysplasia, eye diseases, and ear infections. Regular exercise, a balanced diet, and annual vet checkups are necessary to maintain a Working Kelpie’s health.

Living Environment

The Working Kelpie is active and loves the challenges of life on the farm. They will require plenty of space to be able to run and explore and are not suited to a sedentary life in an apartment. They can adjust to smaller living quarters, but will need plenty of daily exercise and mental stimulation to thrive.

Temperament and Personality

The Working Kelpie is an off-the-charts active, intelligent, and loyal breed. They love to work and need to be kept busy. They are eager to please and have been bred to follow their human’s commands, which makes them very obedient dogs. These dogs are also protective of their families and can be wary of strangers.

Common Challenges

The Working Kelpie can suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for long periods. They can also become overly protective and territorial if not properly socialized when young. Their herding instinct can also lead them to nip at people’s heels, so this must be trained out of them. Additionally, their thick coats require care and maintenance or they can become matted.
