The Pyrenean Mastiff

Breed Overview

The Pyrenean Mastiff is a draught of the breed of Mastiff that was developed for use as a livestock protection dog by Basque shepherds in the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain. It is a large dog with a broad head, a strong body, a short and thick coat and an athletic build. Pyrenean Mastiffs are among the tallest of all breeds, with males standing over 30 inches at the shoulder.

Care and Grooming

The Pyrenean Mastiff has a thick double coat that will require brushing and combing at least twice a week. They do not shed a lot and need minimal bathes. Additionally, Pyreneans have a high prey drive so they should be kept in an enclosed area.

Training and Socialization

Pyrenean Mastiffs require early socialization and obedience training to develop their trust and respect for humans. They have an independent streak and can be dominant. Gentle but firm training methods should be used and only positive reinforcement rewards should be used.

Health and Wellness

Pyrenean Mastiffs are generally healthy and do not have any major health issues. It is important to ensure they are groomed regularly and given a good diet. They are very active so daily exercise should be provided.

Living Environment

Pyreneans are large dogs and require plenty of room. They should be provided with a fenced in yard to run around in. They are also 95% indoor dogs and should not be left outside for extended periods of time.

Temperament and Personality

Pyreneans are loyal, brave, and alert. They are very protective of their family and can be suspicious of strangers. They make wonderful family dogs and are great with children.

Common Challenges

The Pyrenean Mastiff is independent and can be headstrong so training and socialization needs to start at a young age. They are strong willed and do not respond well to harsh training techniques. They require patience and time when it comes to training and are not recommended for first time dog owners.
