Breed Overview

The Komondor is an impressive Hungarian livestock guard dog with a long, thick, corded coat that gives them a signature look. This strong breed was originally bred to protect livestock from predators, and they are hearty enough to stay out overnight in the cold even during the harshest winters. They are known to bond closely to their people, are strong independent thinkers, and can have a protective streak, but can be gentle and sensitive when given the right training and socialization.

The Komondor is known for their hypoallergenic coat that does not molt or shed, making it a breeze to keep your house clean. Brushing your Komondor’s coat every week is advised to keep it tangle-free and clean. This breed will do best with daily exercise, plenty of space to roam, and a regular brushing schedule.

Komondors are very intelligent which makes them easy to train, but they do require consistent reinforcement and positive reward-based training methods. Socializing your Komondor from an early age is important. Ensure your pup is exposed to different people, places, sounds, and objects and is encouraged to be non-reactive and relaxed in new environments. Positive reinforcement is best to create a healthy trusting relationship.

Komondors are a generally hardy breed although they are prone to some common health issues like hip dysplasia, bloat, entropion, and progressive retinal atrophy (PRA).
