Breed Overview

The Czechoslovakian Vlcak is a powerful, agile dog breed that originated in Czechoslovakia in the 1950s. The result of a unique experiment, the Vlcak is a mix of German Shepard, Carpathian Wolf and Slovak Cuvac. These mixed breed animals have an impressive physique, being medium-sized with a strong, square-shaped body and a thick, double coat. The coat of the Vlcak tends to be dense, water-resistant and various shades of gray. The muzzle is strong and powerful with almond-shaped eyes, usually in amber colors.

Care and Grooming

Czechoslovakian Vlcak have a thick double coat that should be brushed every few days to prevent too much shedding. They require a moderate amount of regular exercise in order to stay fit and healthy, and they’re surefooted and can easily handle rough terrain. They don’t have the typical double coat of other long-haired breeds which can benefit owners who aren’t keen on the grooming process.

Training and Socialization

It’s important to start training and socialization early with Czechoslovakian Vlcaks. They’re extremely intelligent dogs and thrive on affections, positive reinforcement and team play. They can act as a watchdog and be reliable hunters, if given the proper training. Czechoslovakian Vlcags love to please their owners and can be taught advanced tasks.

Health and Wellness

Czechoslovakian Vlcak are generally considered to be healthy breeds. The most common health issue they face are hip dysplasia and other common joint issues. It’s important to keep their weight in check since carrying too much weight can aggravate their hip problems. Other health concerns that can occur include bloat and epilepsy.

Living Environment

Due to their size and energetic nature, Czechoslovakian Vlcaks require space for exercise. An apartment is not the best option for this breed and they would be better off in a rural place with plenty of space to roam and play. They prefer to be active and love to have a job to do which makes them great tracer or agility dogs.

Temperament and Personality

The Czechoslovakian Vlcak is generally friendly, loyal and social. They form close relationships with their owners and love to spend quality time with them. They are territorial and protective of those they love and can make good watchdogs. It’s important to socialize this breed early on so that they get along well with other animals and children.

Common Challenges

The most common challenges with the Czechoslovakian Vlcak are that they may be too protective and too dominant if not properly socialized early on. They can also be overly energetic and have difficulty if not given sufficient exercise.
