Beauceron

Breed Overview

The Beauceron is a large, muscular working breed of dog that has been used as a guard dog, hunting dog, and shepherd. Beaucerons are also known as Berger de Beauce and Bas Rouge. This breed can be identified by their large, black and tan double coat, their long, docked tail, and a naturally short, muzzle.

Care and Grooming

Beaucerons need to be brushed weekly and professionally groomed every 4-6 weeks or so. They also need to have their ears and nails trimmed regularly. These smart, active dogs require moderate exercise on a regular basis.

Training and Socialization

Beaucerons need proper, consistent, and positive training and socialization from an early age in order to be happy, healthy, and well-adjusted companions. Training should focus on teaching basic obedience and proper behavior. Puppy classes are recommended.

Health and Wellness

Beaucerons are generally healthy dogs, but they can be prone to certain health issues such as hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and eye issues. It is important to work with a reputable breeder in order to ensure that health issues are seen to and dealt with in an appropriate manner.

Living Environment

Beaucerons can thrive in many types of living environments. They do, however, need a lot of exercise and space to run. A house with a large yard and plenty of outdoor space is ideal.

Temperament and Personality

Beaucerons are gentle, intelligent, and protective dogs that are devoted to their families. These dogs are easy to train and make loyal and devoted companions.

Common Challenges

Beaucerons may become territorial and protective if they are not adequately socialized and trained. They can also be difficult to housebreak, as they are stubborn and independent thinkers. With consistent, positive training, however, these dogs can be taught acceptable behavior.
